Artbank is pleased to be taking part again in the Melbourne Art Fair which this year runs from 30 July to 3 August at the Historic Royal Melbourne Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens, Melbourne. As Artbank has such a high stake in the Australian art market we are continually finding ways to make our collection and the work of our artists more accessible to the public. Participating in high profile events like the Melbourne Art Fair helps us to spread the word about Artbank and our role in the Australian art scene to artists, galleries, Indigenous communities and the public.

Melbourne Art Fair 2008
The Melbourne Art Fair Foundation was established in May 2003 to support living artists and promote contemporary art. In conjunction with the fair which runs biannually, the foundation also runs two biannual awards, one for outstanding achievement by an Australian artist and the second for an Australian who has developed and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to progress the status of contemporary art practice. These awards are granted in the year the fair isn’t run, so the next awards will be in 2009.
The Fair features work from over eighty national and international galleries and is one of Australia’s best opportunities to view what is happening in the contemporary art market. Eighty per cent of works exhibited at the fair have been created post 1970 and are by artists who are still alive today. This emphasis on contemporary artists and arts communities is something that is also very much part of Artbank’s philosophy.
In addition to the exhibitions, the Fair involves a national and international collectors’ program, public lectures, exhibitions, art publications, guided tours and associated parties and events. This year the fair’s guided tours will be led by Artbank staff.
