Artbank e-bulletin - August 2008

Artbank has recently completed one of its most exciting installations to date in the Fraser's Property Lumiere building in Sydney’s CBD. This “vertical village” reaches extravagantly into the clouds and features a perfect fusion of art and furnishings. Ed Spencer, architect with Smart Design, approached Artbank seeking works to compliment their interior, one designed to suit a well travelled sophisticate with eclectic tastes and a discerning eye.

Quality finishes and fittings in the study are complemented by painting and sculpture from senior artists Ray Crooke and Clifford Last  (pictured top right) . The rooms muted colour scheme is lifted with intriguing objects tucked into bookshelves including a triptych of industrial landscapes by Holly McNamee that work like sculptures. In the kitchen (pictured  bottom right)  a Shirley Purdie abstract in rich ochres is off set by travertine flooring and George Jensen vases. Indeed, emphasis is on creating texture and warmth with a fantastic range of sculpture throughout.

The 25th annual Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art award, the country's leading indigenous art prize, was held last week in Darwin. This year Dennis Nona took out the work on paper prize. Dennis’ work is well represented in the Artbank collection and features prominently in the current international touring exhibition Gelam Nguzu Kazi – Dugong My Son, curated and produced by Artbank for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. We would like to congratulate other Artbank artists Richard Bell, Napuwarri Marawili, Irenie Ngalinba and Shirley Purdie who also received high commendations at the Telstra awards.

By any measure Artbank's presence at the Melbourne Art Fair in July was a great success. The Artbank stand was visited throughout the 5 days of the fair by clients old and new, artists, arts professionals and members of the general public and the official guided tours of the Fair conducted by Artbank representatives were well patronised. The collection has been expanded by a total of 55 works purchased from galleries throughout Australia. Look out for a feature on the exceptionally strong group of works bought at the Art Fair from WA galleries in the September edition of the e-bulletin.
