Cabbage Tree Palms, 1981Oil on canvas

David Chapman was more concerned with conveying the essence of a locality rather than its precise physical details. His many paintings of the Tasmanian countryside are intimate rather than heroic. They capture the unique character of the landscape, and highlight its colour and rapidly changing quality of light. Chapman most often used a high key palette, with fresh, clean colours and a direct and confident application of paint that recalls the style of the French Impressionists and their followers.
