Artbank has been collecting art for over forty years and within that time we have acquired many images and sculptures of dogs. From George Millpurrurru’s Dog Dreaming to Rodney Pople’s poodles, our relationship to canine species says a lot about the society we live in, our interests and desires. Courtney Kidd, art consultant and art critic, and perhaps more importantly dog lover, has put together this selection of work from the collection.

Artists have responded in a varied and fulsome way to the different characters and lives of dogs. There are intimate portraits of dogs with names and homes. From Cherry Hood’s portrait to Prudence Flint’s dog park romance. There are camp dogs and city dogs, dogs as metaphor and ornamental shelled dogs. This exhibition highlights how important dogs are in our culture and art.

International Dog Day (August 26) is a day to remember and honour all dogs and to also think of all of those animals that might need care and aid.
